Yacht and boat owners know the effects of a fouled hull.  Instead of a
smooth, clean hull cutting through the water, marine growth creates
drag and reduces speed.  Extra demand on engines to maintain speed
means increased fuel use and added cost, regardless of vessel size.
Fouling is the result of marine growth. This constant process begins
anywhere from two weeks up to six months, depending on the season.
This is true even for a newly-painted hull.  If left unchecked, growth
continues to spread from the running gear to the hull.

Tests show a fouled hull can increase fuel costs by 20-25%!!
